What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?
I was talking to my homie DBash earlier, and he said that BY DEFINITION, a forum like Spacecast is designed to allow and encourage detailed discussion of episodes and entire series after they have aired, which again By Definition requires spoilers. To seek to discuss a show without reference to what has happened on that show, is, DBash argues, inane. He says forums exist to discuss details of episodes, and series, and share ideas and opinions on those very specific details. To object to spoilers is to object to the very raison d'etre of a public forum, and, DBash concludes, such objectors are 'sucky babies.' The above is the gist of D's opinions as I understood them. Opinions anyone?

I think you've gotten most of what I was saying correct, but I never used the term 'sucky babies'. It'll do, though, because the words I used shouldn't be made available in polite company. And, as a personal disclaimer, while it was my idea to start this thread initially, I encouraged Rusty to seek the glory for himself. I was s'posed to be the "Silent Partner" and get paid a nominal fee discretely. Anyway, let the games begin...!

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?
Kitane:I say put the season or episode in the title of any thread started, and anyone that hasn't seen that ep, or is silly enough to open the thread without reading the title, deserves to have it spoiled for them. .............................................................
I second that. Once the tittle op the ep is given, it becomes the choice of the reader to get in or not.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?
figure as long as you give notice in one sentence of your post when you will begin providing spoiler information...try to scroll down a few lines to separate that from the last paragraph, that should be enough distance for anyone else not wanting to read much in the way of plot details of an episode or movie they have not seen. myself, i try not to discuss too much of plot except in retrospect to past episodes and then, if i can, toss out as much speculation of potential plot paths as possible. doesn't always work but i try...sort of...i guess...maybe... but i am more of a characterization and theme person myself when it comes down to discussing television shows, movies, or books. so, for the most part, spoilers are no great worry for me...i can always either avoid a thread marked Spoiler Alert or scroll past any of the texts that contain spoiler info.
Thanks, but I don't need any help getting into trouble since I seem to manage quite well on my own.

Your suggestion, Gregg, is like giving a full box of the best chocolate to Spotthecat and telling her not to open that box and more important, not to taste even one peace.

Hi Gregg, Let's try to limit it to TV shows, just for argument's sake. This whole thing originated in a Battlestar Galactica thread after someone started talking openly about theories and where the story will go now without putting "Spoiler Alert" in the thread title. I myself have no issue with spoilers... if I didn't see an episode and didn't want to know something about the show, the last thing I would do is go to the BSG forum and start casually looking through threads to see what everyone else is talking about. My issue is once an episode of a show has aired more than once, at what point is it acceptable to have a discussion with others who've seen the same show without having to worry about spoiler alerts? For instance, things that happened in last season's finale are discussed quite openly now without anyone posting spoiler alerts or being offended by lack thereof; however, a week after this season's finale aired - twice, by the way - the abovementioned happened and the issue came up again. It seems kind of pointless - to me - to have to type "Spoiler Alert" at the beginning of each post in a thread when, in my opinion, anyone who would be upset by spoilers would have already seen the show or have sense enough not to go in that area of the forum in the first place. And if you come here and see a title that gives one detail away, however significant, is that reason to warn the forum member that he/she ought to change the title of the thread to contain "Spoiler Alert"? I really believe in some cases, mountains are made out of molehills. And to be fair, in response to Kitane's post above, it's more than one person who has taken it upon themselves to be the "friendly warning" here, BUT... while I have seen the moderators use "Spoiler Warnings" in their posts since I started coming here two years ago, I have not witnessed one of them chastising a forum member for posting spoilers, whether it be for books, movies or TV shows. Maybe that's why a "Spoiler Patrol" is deemed necessary? Let the members police themselves...?

I think it's fair to say this is to a large degree an unmoderated forum. I doubt any posts are moderated at all unless the mods receive direct complaints about them.

On the whole subject of the thread, frankly, I don't give a darn.

I haven't been chastised by a moderator, but I have had one edit my post to include a spoiler warning and twenty lines of space between the warning and my comment. And that was for a show that has been off the air for thirty years.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?
For myself personally, the only problem I had with the aforementioned BSG thread was that there was a big spoiler in the thread title (where it can't be avoided by casual forum browsers). Once the OP changed the title, there was no problem, and as far as I'm
concerned he doesn't need to keep apologizing just because one poster
refused to drop the issue. The rest of us know he meant no harm. IMO, the spoilers within the thread text were completely legitimate - anyone who hadn't seen the finale would be pretty stupid to be reading a BSG thread and not expect to come across spoilers. I'll never be upset at someone for posting a spoiler, providing their intent wasn't malicious. It's pretty obvious (given the number of times this forum has beaten the spoiler issue to death) that there's a lot of disagreement on the topic. I try to err on the side of caution when posting spoilers, but when it comes to what I choose to read ... well, the old usenet phrase "manage your own damn internet" comes to mind.

Really? What was the show and how long ago did this happen?

Blake's Seven. Last year or early this year. I mentioned something that happened in season two. Technically it was a major spoiler, but a thirty-year old spoiler. So now I am like Sargent Schultz (from another old-timey tv show).
