The rumors that I'm hearing are that Windows 7 (the next version after Vista) is going to be modular, so maybe it means that MS is finally going to reign in the bloat.

    One can only hope.

As for Vista, as far as I can tell, it works fine. Just the way it's supposed to. To me, Vista looks like a pretty XP with security, unfortunately, it's the security that annoys me, so I'm still sticking with XP for a while. I just hope that XP SP3 doesn't add that annoying crap.

In my mind though, the biggest problem with Vista, is Microsoft. There are so many problems that THEY CAUSED. If they weren't so fat headed and greedy,  they could have avoided many problems that Vista gets blamed for and everyone would be a lot happier.

    New Phenoms B3 are out.

    Read about it here.

Honestly, I dunno why AMD keeps trying.  With word about their recent 5% layoffs, and the Phenoms totally sucking-- like that TLB bug-- you gotta wonder how they stay in business.  Good thing I changed my mind at the last moment about buying that mobo.-- I was disappointed, because my current 5200 duo core machine is faster.

These new CPUs are a good thing, but nothing to get Intel worried in a tizzy about. Sad  Makes me rethink about changing over... nah. Big Smile

    PC potpourri.

Bought a copy of the Sonic The Hedghog collection on CD.  Not bad, for $19.95.  Loved how they restored the original SEGA games... as I see it now, it compares to today's games as the Atari 2600 my dad used to play.

AMD seems to be in trouble these days-- the layoffs, the poor Phenom performance, keep hoping they'll make a comeback, or what? Big Smile  Read it here.

Seems XP's latest release of SP3 didn't do too well.  Can't Microsoft do anything right?  Other than Bill Gates retiring, the only exception.

Meanwhile, my ATI 3870 card dropped to $189 at FUTURESHOP this week... the one I payed $249 for-- I think I'm gona be sick Ick!.  Man, I shoulda' waited. Sad

ATI is coming out with the new 4800 series video cards this June.  Read is here.

Microsoft's latest keyboards and mice verily suck.  Not attractive or appealing at all, IMHO-- what were they thinking?  I repeat: Can't they do anything right?

Hauppage's new PCI-e 1800 PVR TV card is really cool!  I want it-- but not for $159.  I'll pounce on it the next time FUTURESHOP has a sale... which hopefully won't be for long.  All you need is a PCI-e 1x8 slot as a minimum.  All I have are PCI-e x 16!  NEWSFLASH:  Learned that PCI-e slots are backwards compatible, meaning you can fit a teenie-weenie 1x8 card into a full 1x16 slot and it will work.  Cool!  Learning, learning, all the time... Big Smile

I've been hearing about problems with SP3, but I installed it and everything looks fine here.I was having problems with Explorer crashing occasionally, but after SP3 I haven't seen that happen. So, I guess I'm the only one happy with it.

As for Billy retiring, I've read rumors that he will delay that until the Vista mess is sorted out just so he doesn't go out on a low note..

My card was way more expensive than yours and I could have waited too, but that would mean that I wouldn't have had it when I wanted it, and if I waited, something new would have been available to jack the price up again. If you want something good and you want it now, it's going to cost. That's all there is too it.

I'm having some problems with my new mouse and keyboard too. Remember the one I was so happy with after dumping the annoying Logitech one? I don't know what I'm going to have to do to get a good mouse and keyboard these days. I might have to go back to a corded model.

Just an update on my PC. It's been 16 months since I built it. Other than the keyboard/mouse problems, I'm very happy with it. I've since upgraded my boot drive to a RAID 1 (mirror) so that both my System and Data drives have some protection now. The Quad core CPU is great, I am right now converting 15 AVI files to DivX. I've read that an average PC could take an hour to do that with one file and I can do almost all 15 in the same amount of time.

Ooo... the RAID.  That brings back memories.  Remember when motherboards were made with 4 IDE channels instead of 2?  Big Smile

I'll be upgrading to the Phenom shortly... now that AMD has released the 9850 it's worth it.

Re: Vista is so bad no one steals it.

Yea that is funny. But one question sorta springs into my mind. What are all these problems that everyone seems to be having. Okay heres my point yes some of the older software doesn't work on Vista printers web cams etc but isn't this to be expected with an upgraded system. A few years ago (Maybe 8) I bought an old game called Karandia 1-3. I played it on mac years earlier, had some fun but they didn't have 2 or 3. So when I got a PC with windows XP I went out and got the game I tried to install it and it wouldn't work the software was just to old.

Re: Vista is so bad no one steals it.

Aside the horrible "in your face" UAC and the RIAA's pet DRM restrictions, it's pure bloatware that offers absolutely no reason to downgrade to Vista.

    Identical hardware.

Windows XP Pro, Microsoft OEM, SP2, standard clean boot procedure. 19 processes running, 221M commit charge.

Windows Vista Home Premium, Microsoft OEM, SP1, clean boot with Superfetch disabled. 34 processes running, 876M commit charge.

No matter how you dress it up, that is still 655 megabytes of lard. And it all belongs to processes that compete with your application for main memory.
