    Re: To AvsP Haters

I finally caught this since I ended up in Cowtown with nothing to do.  $12.50 to see a movie?!?!  That's robbery!!

As for the movie, I prefer the first one since there was at least some that you got to know.  All sorts of people were introduced and then offed and it was like 'Oh well, there goes another."  If you are going to introduce people at least do something with them.  One character is introduced as a convict and I guess that was to show that he was fairly good at running away, which for his character is pretty important in the story.

Other characters are so stupid it is unbelievable and deserved to be offed, just to get their genes out of the gene pool, so it was hard to care for them.  Maybe, because I am a survivor of Raccoon City I could see what was happening at the end but the others should have been able to see it too.

The humans weren't the only ones that did things that made no sense.   I could buy the Predators sending one of their own to be a cleaner as some have suggested, kind of like the "One riot, one Ranger" mentality, but he was pretty sloppy for one.  He stops to hunt humans while he is after big game?  That's like stopping to take care of bunnies while hunting grizzly bear.  Have one target and take care of it.  Then go for the bunnies.  He also went to Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship School too.

There were so many possibilities and they just seem to have dumped blue liquid all over them to make them disappear.  When you are sitting there and coming up with what you could have done better, you know the movie is in trouble.

Especially for that movie, it seems.

A friend of mine in Halifax saw it for free and still felt ripped off.

I know they are always trying to take you in the Big City but that is still ridiculous.  It gave me a bigger shock than anything I saw in the actual movie.

    Re: To AvsP Haters

The humans in AvP 1 were sooo much better. The only use in Requiem was to prove that NONE of the humans were worth saving.

That said, I liked the movie. Sure not as good as the 1st, but I wouldn't expect that anyway, #1 was amazing. Requiem's premise of Predator meets Dawson's Creek was lame; and concentrating on these Daswon's Creekers was ter-Rible. But there were more Pred-vs-Alien fights than #1, and enough of these scenes were cool enough to easily deem the steep ticket price.

Loved the last fight between Predator and Preda-Alien, the alien even used a gadget!!

Was there any specific allusion to the mysterious company woman at the end?

Ms. Yutani?  The one whose name is contained in the company name Weyland-Yutani?  She was only referenced at the very end.

Is that the company from Alien movies? Someone joked about it, but I wasn't sure if they were serious.

Yes.  Until they were bought out by Wal-Mart.

Really?! They just struck me as a completey random assortment of international co-production staffers.

That said, I liked the movie. Sure not as good as the 1st, but I wouldn't expect that anyway, #1 was amazing.

I finally saw Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (not sure what was up with that title) tonight on DVD. And while it was not a great movie by any means, I'd say it was markedly better than Alien Vs. Predator, if only because it was so much more faithful to the original movies in spirit, music, violence, action, lighting and peril.

The problem is, while Alien Vs. Predator was too high-concept, Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem is too low-concept by steeping itself so deeply in homage. It doesn't really do anything new with the franchises, despite finally getting to the 'Aliens in America' premise that had been hinted at ever since Alien: Resurrection.

The alien queen (born from a Predator chest) didn't really make any sense. She only sometimes acted queen-like. And that reproduction method managed to top the accelerated birth syndrome of Alien Vs. Predator in sheer silliness (and lack of faith to what had been established in the earlier films).

I guess the saving grace was going in knowing this would be essentially a typical American slasher flick with aliens and predators instead of Jason and Freddy. If I'd been expecting anything more interesting in genre, I would have been very disappointed ... but the results were significantly better executed than Paul W.S. Anderson's abortion.

    Re: To AvsP Haters

The main problem with AvP, and there were many, was that the stand-up video game had better characters, better story, and better action scenes.  So we got far more entertainment with a few quarters than with the $12 bucks we spend to see a movie around here.

Not yet.  I'm still waiting for it to show up on tv.  The first AVP is now in the cheap bin at  $5.00, but they want $25-$30 for Requiem!

I'd tape it.   That way you can fastforward through most of it and have the satisfaction of erasing it later.

Uh, to buy, yeah ... but why would you buy it? Let alone sight-unseen?

    Re: To AvsP Haters

Taping it is a good idea (and erasing, haha).   I might buy it for $5.00.  Probably not, but ...

The rental place I had an account at closed down, and there is no other place close to my house.

I have occasionally bought a movie sight unseen - I live life dangerously - and I had luck at first, but after Crank and  Domino, I've rethought my strategy.

    Jason Statham is the man.
