At least you don't have to watch "Security" videos that have nothing to do with you, such as the Homeland Security video that they made us watch. Why would I care what terror level they have in the States? It won't affect me in my little town of Chatham. :(

    Re: Book you're reading

i can do the current reading and will just mention three.

After the Dark, by Max Allen Collins, the third in the Dark Angel series trilogy of original novels (and a good read so far...steve, take note.)

Kate Wilhelm's Where Late the Sweet Birds Sing.

and Robert Heinlein's Tramp Royale, his round-the-world odyssey travel book that was written in the mid-fifties but could not get a publisher to take it (they were sort of overstuffed on travelogue books then) so it sat in the files until Virginia Heinlein offered it up following his death when publishers wanted "unpublished" Heinleins to offer the fans. and, for the record, i am enjoying it very much. gives rare insights into how Heinlein viewed the world and life and all during this period in his life and career.

    Re: Book you're reading

first part of the book is her novelette from, i believe, the Orbit original anthology series. deals with an Appalachian family of farmers/landowners with members involved in various branches of science, economics, etc. who prepare for coming ecological/economic apocalypse, courtesy of pollution combined with biowar foulups, by creating a haven on their semi-isolated holding and also developing cloning program to ensure that humankind continues as a species after almost total sterility results from the environmental contamination.

second part of the novel deals with the surviving clones and the curious family-group culture they develop and their explorations of the surrounding american heartland (including Washington, D.C.) post-apocalypse.
