Why do I get the feeling this thread is "some what" direct at me?

 

Yeah I admit my spelling is not that great, but I have visual disability. True I should be using check spell. The thing is when I look at the key board I sometimes hit the key next to the one I ment to type.

As an editor, I make my very living from fixing others' spelling and grammar mistakes, so ... bring 'em on, world! ;)

But on this board, yes, I often take folks to task for stupid errors. I believe in universal freedom of expression, so long as that also means I'm free to point and laugh at them.

Y'know... for one of the few times in my life, I agree with Vok. Yes, the Four Horsemen are saddling up.

Leoben, a forum is a place to discuss topics. At no time was anyone named, nor were any mean-spirited comments directed at anyone in particular. It just so happened that someone started the thread here, so it was discussed here... not that anyone was deliberately ignoring BSG-related topics.

It has been said before & will be again that if you don't like someone else's post, ignore it. No one's making you read something you don't want to read.

I, like a lot of others, I suppose, have noticed the growing trend of people just blatantly not caring if what they write in any medium, not just here on this forum, can be understood by others. I'm not referring to someone with a disability or who isn't fluent in the language... you see it everywhere... in signs at the grocery store, in commercials by professional advertising companies... in magazines when something slips by an editor. You have to wonder when an English professor goes to his supermarket and looks at a sign that says "Potato's - $3.99/10 lb's"... how hard does he bite his tongue? Every time you write something and make it public, someone will judge you not only on what you've said, but how you have chosen to say it. That's not meant to be offensive to anyone, but it is true.

English is perhaps one of the most versatile and adaptable languages on the planet, but it does have certain rules that allow it to function. In my opinion - and it is my opinion, so I'm entitled to it - it's a sad state of affairs when a person doesn't know how to communicate properly in one's own language. Do you not agree?

Besides... am I not allowed to comment on the topic, even when I didn't bring it up?

Not at all. It is ironic, though, to see people who complain about poor spelling and grammar wind up making their own spelling and grammatical errors in their posts ....

Or don't. It's not necessarily sad or mean-spirited to reply to such a post. After all, it's a discussion board, not just a soapbox for folks to make posts without allowing responses ....

Pathetic in what way? Spelling and grammar are a lot more universal than Battlestar Galactica and its continually dwindling ratings. Great show, don't get me wrong, but I certainly know not everyone here watches it.

Yes. I myself have paid increasingly less attention to BSG over the past two years.  The themes of hybrid children and religion were to me uninteresting, yet these ideas have come to dominate the series.  

Oh, and on topic for this thread:  it irritates when people use the word 'pretty' as a measure of degree.  But to do so is becoming common usage.  Argh.

LOL.   This is called quoting out of context.   If you had quoted my entire sentence it would have negated your criticism.  As follows:

 LOL...Geeze that's what I have meant all these years when thinking that a woman is pretty. She actually has "more" of something.

DBash ... I was studying the past several months for the International Society of Arborists exam and only popping in here now and then. As a trivial note I passed with 84%.

Me too... I don't know anyone who hasn't used the word 'pretty' in this way at some time or another. It's pretty much an accepted saying these days.

A word I don't like, let alone use, is 'irregardless'... the combination of 'regardless' and 'irrelevant'... and I hear it quite often. I was arguing with a co-worker last year that it wasn't a word and he looked it up online - dictionary.com, maybe? - and, apparently, it's in there as a slang term. Go figure... I wonder if it would count in Scrabble? LOL!
