    Re: Book you're reading

Last: Humans by Robert Sawyer - Something really irks me about this series, but something keeps me coming back at the same time. Hard to explain.

Current: Iron Councile by China Mievelle - A couple chapters in now and I may have something for yearly reading material (an honour I currently have for the LotR trilogy, which I read every year at the start of December and finish before Christmas).

Next: Either something by Neil Gaiman (perhaps Neverwhere or Good Omens) or by William Gibson. Though going through Frank Herbert's Dune sounds pretty promising to do again.

I know that... but you make a good point -- perhaps I will wait and get the whole story before I start in on it. It would be a good Christmas present.

I finished Traitor's Moon last night. I reccommend both the 'Nightrunners' series and the as yet not complete 'Tamir Trilogy', By Lynn Flewelling. fun books well written and not 'standard' fantasy fare.

current at home: Left Behind, the Revelations-based Christian fantasy or science-fantasy, however you want to put it, part of that series and they made some kind of prequel movie in canada featuring Kirk Cameron.

picked this up and the two sequels a while ago 'cause the premise sounded interesting and i figured, 'what the hey, give it a shot'. only just now got down through the pile of hardcovers and softcover trades to this one.

upcoming: a mystery novel by Mary Higgins Clark, believe the title is Iced.

finished When Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm and also the last volume in a four-volume translation of Journey to the West (a.k.a. The Adventures of the Monkey King), a classical Chinese novel which has seen various animated adaptations over the past couple of decades (including one i remember watching as a child back in the early 60s).

Gregg -- the Left Behind premise is certainly intriguing, I've been debating adding the first novel to my summer stack. Never thought I'd give Christian Sci-Fi a whirl, but stranger things have happened. You'll have to post your verdict on the first novel once you've finished.

Right now I'm currently reading Permanent Midnight -- the bio of Jerry Stahl, a Hollywood screenwriter who battled heroin addiction while penning episodes of the TV show ALF. Hilarious -- and dark. Just like life.

I believe that is Neil Gaiman, gregg. :)

    Consider it a deal, Gregg.

And yes, Shadowshiv is correct, my sig pic is the aforementioned Mr. Gaiman (although I believe it's quite old -- probably taken from back in his Sandman heyday). Thought it was about time I put a writer's mug up there.

I've been reading a lot of Gaiman's stuff lately, and have really enjoyed his work. Neverwhere is next in line after Permanent Midnight.

    Re: Book you're reading

I've read a dozen books in the last few weeks.
I have 3 books to praise.

Hiding the Elephant (suggested by the photogenic Neil Gaiman) which is a brilliant non-fiction book about how magicians create illusions, written by the man who designed and built magical machines for Doug Henning. Also wonderfully illustrated by Willian Stout.

Something Rotten, the fourth and latest Thursday Next novel by Jasper Fforde. Rollicking fun. A great beach read. If you're new to Fforde, start with The Eyre Affair. This guy is in the class of Gaiman, Pratchett, and Adams. Clever, smart, and very, very funny.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by first time novelist Susanna Clarke. This is the best first novel since I don't know when, and puts Clarke on the map in a big way. I originally read this months ago, but I re-read it because I'm going to interview her when she comes to Toronto in October. Simply first rate! A brilliant historical fantasy that blows most fantasy, and even most historical fiction, out of the water. A tour de force.

    Looking forward to Iron Council...

Lynn and I are really looking forward to this. We're picking up our copy this weekend, but we may have to read Pratchett's Hatful of Sky first, as it's on loan from the library. But I'm truly stoked about Something Rotten. More dodos!! PLOCK! :D
