Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?

    DBash:
Since spoilers are open to individual interpretation in some cases, one person's view is no more important than someone else's here... on a forum where, regardless of how many times you post or how long you've been a member, we should all be equals.

Of course. When I spoke of 'old hands' on this board, I never suggested that (a) they should receive benefits of seniority, (b) they knew any better than anyone else or (c) they should serve as spoiler police.

My worry was that people who happened to be old hands here, like Terry, were being driven away from the board by a newfound openness of expression whereby spoilers were being posted willy-nilly, including thread titles. I would argue that such posts are more likely to be made by first-time visitors, but that's beside the point.

Instead, we have a bunch of wannabes going around telling people what they should & shouldn't do and everyone has a different list of characteristics for what constitutes an offence. Agree or disagree?

I disagree. If you're referring to me, I never told anyone what they should or shouldn't do, I just asked that a thread's title be changed because it contained a major, recent, arc-changing plot point from Battlestar Galactica ... and placed that plot point right in front of anyone who might be passing through Active Topics.

It doesn't make me a wannabe mod. I most certainly do not want to moderate this board. But as you mention, I'm an equal, so I have every right to voice my displeasure with the way something has been posted, that's all.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?

For those who have not seen an episode which is sometime "spoiled" here i can understand it is annoying to get told what happen, and maybe some want to read spolers cause they want to know what happen at the end before the see the beginning......can't be worste than the spoilers we sometime gets for an upcoming episode of x series or movies which by seeing the trailers are filled with spoilers and we (most of us) hate this, its like the Cliff Notes of movies for people with short attention span.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?

For the record, I wasn't referring to any one person in particular. I believe I stated that several times. If it appears I was referring to you in this case, it's because my post was replying to yours.

And yes, you have every right to voice your displeasure, Vok. I never meant to suggest you - or AKalel or anyone else -  didn't. I'm just trying to find some consistency in all these spoiler warning posts, that's all... especially when, the last few I've seen, the person posting had already seen the show.

Anyway, I thought that's what the forum was for... to discuss issues. And the "Spoiler Patrol" here is, apparently, an issue.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?

On a seperate note I just want to comment on the moderators.  Now I am not sure how active they are here or not.  In any event I would in some aspects not in favor of anyone becoming a moderator cause for lack of a better term/cliche a moderator would have to ascertain if just because a thread or a post looked or smelled like a duck does it mean it is a duck.  Also if you came accross a problem post or thread what do you do.  Finally I am sure the moderators have a life outside of here and not to belittle them as a moderator like the term spoiler what does it mean, what do your duties involve and if there is a problem what can one realy do?  Sure you can attempt to ban the poster or warn them heck maybe even delete the offensive (for lack of a better term) thread or post but by that time who knows if any damage might be done.  I guess we can just hope for most people try to keep things peaceful where no one gets unhappy and everything runs nice and smooth.

Do you visit/read/post on other online discussion forums? There are many that are heavily moderated, especially compared to this one, so there are plenty of examples out there of how to handle a 'problem post or thread.' It's not really that difficult to understand. And yes, those forums tend to post the 'rules' up front so there's no justification for confusion.

I'm not sure if you're asking me or AKalel, but yes, I am and do.

Yes, having the 'rules' posted up front does lead to a lot less confusion, as does having the place heavily moderated.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, Vok. Not on the spoiler issue per se, but you seem to feel that the responsibility for spoilers rests 100% on the person posting them. I think the reader of a spoiler should shoulder 50% of the blame.

As I stated, if you (generic, not specifically you, Vok):

    1. are going to a fan forum where your shows are being discussed and

    2. know seeing a spoiler will upset you and

    3. are not up-to-date on your show and

    4. enter the forum through the 'Active Threads' link or some such equally vague portal, which you know from past experience could put you in the middle of an unlabelled spoiler thread

    then:

You're an idiot and deserve to have the show spoiled for you. You should keep your whine to a minimum and not bother anyone else. It's not the end of the world... think of it as a surprise party that your boyfriend/girlfriend is throwing for you and someone leaked to you a week in advance by accident. The party will still go ahead... you just have to pretend you don't know, so smile and act surprised when the lights come on and everyone jumps up from behind the furniture.

    That's just my opinion.

Anyway, it seems that I'm doing most of the yakking here... I'm growing weary of this and of repeating myself. I'm sure most of you are tired of reading what I'm saying too, if anyone is still bothering... so, Happy Canada Day everyone! I'm gonna put my red & white Maple Leaf toque on, pour maple syrup over my pancakes & back bacon and sit on my deck drinking beer all day, like the proud Canadian lout that I am. Cheers! Beer

P.S. WHO - Nothing wrong with fences, my friend. They keep the neighbour's dog from leaving his smelly presents in my yard so I don't accidentally mulch one when mowing the lawn. Ick! Wink

I'm not sure if you're asking me or AKalel

The latter, as he was wondering how a board could be policed for spoilers.

Re: What's Your Opinion on Spoilers?

Ok I choose not to reply since it was not clear who you were addressing,  Now as for your question when you say other online discussion foroums I take it you mean other message boards if not please rephrase.  If you do mean other message boards yes I do all 3.  This board in someways is very unique in the the type of posters, the different types of posts, the people that appear to post here and heck even the moderators itself.  Now I am specualting here that in someways because of those things it can be somewhat ackward to police not just spoilers but anything here.  Without rehashing everything mentioned I think one of the big things is to get everyone to agree with what a spoiler is and if that could happen here then the other things might fall into place but I do not think that could occur.
