The author Steven Brust was approached to write a tie-in novel awhile back, but it was shelved for various reasons. It's now available online: http://dreamcafe.com/firefly.html

The movie was one of the first to be released on HD, but now it's finally going to be available on Blu-ray: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2023

There's a few interesting extras on this release.
