Poll on the future of anime on the Space channel.

Be free to answer this poll with comments on what sci-fi based anime and cartoons would you like to see on Space. Does Robotech want you to watch more of this same kind of programming on Space?

    Mav...

Do you think with the popularity of Robotech on the Space channel, that more sci-fi based anime should be shown on Space?

With the popularity of Robotech on the Space channel, do you feel the time is about ripe for Space channel to show more sci-fi based anime and cartoons. There are other anime series such as Star Blazers, Filmation's Flash Gordon, Force Five series, Mobilesuit Gundam that would be ideal an animation block on the Space channels schedule.
    • Yes, I think we need more sci-fi based anime and cartoons on Space. (83.3%)
    • No, I think it's a better fit on an anime or cartoon channel. (8.3%)
    • Maybe, as long as the anime or cartoon fits the sci-fi genre then it's ok (ie. Robotech and Filmation's Flash Gordon) (8.3%)

Re: Poll on the future of anime on the Space channel.

As I've said before, SPACE definitely needs to try and keep sci-fi anime going on the station. Just one or two shows at a time would be just perfect. (An overload of variety was one of the few problems with TechTV's Anime Current block - they had blown through just about every notable title in Geneon's catalogue in under a year!). It would be nice to see some recent titles somewhere down the line, but since YTV generally has that area covered, seeing some slightly older titles would be a good area of focus for SPACE. Especially since Cowboy Bebop, the absolute best title to kick things off with, is already in CTV's hands. It's currently airing on Razer, and they're getting a tonne of mileage out of it, but it really deserves a more mainstream venue!

Oh, and definitely at a later, older-skewing timeslot. Please.

As already stated, Gundam would be a nice choice but, and thats a huge but, not the older series. I saw some prettty recent stuff on the net and it looks amazing! I love old anime but Space image would benefit a lot by showing off good looking stuff instead of the likes of the old robotech series (I'm a fan but lets be honnest, aside from the nostalgia and sometimes good story it looks terrible compared to todays animation).

Anyone seen the mini-serie Giant Robo? that would be an awesome show even if it does only have like 6 or 7 episode.

Well, YTV has locked up the newer ones ....

Re: Poll on the future of anime on the Space channel.

My choices for anime series on Space would be Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I think Space should stay away from things like Gundam since it's not "fresh." That is, we've been exposed to the more current and popular series are already on YTV, whereas the older series would be "just another Robotech show."

As for anime movies, I think Space DEFINITELY needs to get the first Ghost In The Shell movie, Akira, and some or all of the Miyazaki movies. They wouldn't even need an anime block for these: just put them in the "Movies From Space" blocks.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is more than a decade old now, but I take your point. And it was a really great series, as much a classic as Macross was. If the new movie was getting a big release, Space could tie in with the hype ... but sadly, I doubt there'll be much if any hype at all for it in Canada.

    They probably can't, though.

The first Ghost in the Shell movie airs from time to time on IFC. Anywhere else that airs it will probably be a channel with an existing deal with Manga Entertainment; e.g. SuperChannel.

Akira aired on Teletoon last month. Knowing Teletoon, it'll air there again soon enough.

All of Miyazaki's movies are controlled by Disney on this side of the Pacific. Not only does Space not seem to deal much (if at all) with Disney-supplied content, but a butchered version of Spirited Away aired on CBC fairly recently. Princess Mononoke sometimes airs on IFC and YTV.

There are plenty of other opportunities for Space to pursue, though.

Who owns the rights to Steamboy? That would do very well on Space.

Given that most 'anime' nowadays is nothing more than flavor-of-the-week garbage designed to keep mouthbreathers quiet for 25 minutes, I say no. If it's an older series, maybe.

Gundam sucks. Gundam always has sucked. Gundam always will suck.

I think it was released here by Sony? It was produced by Bandai ....

What's with the quotation marks? The word anime itself doesn't connote any particular quality, high or low. It simply refers to the output of the Japanese animation industry, some of which is going to be good, some of which is going to be bad.

And there are plenty of good recent and new shows, like Flag, Death Note and Ergo Proxy. I don't expect any of 'em to show up on Space, mind you, but they're certainly out there.

Re: Poll on the future of anime on the Space channel.

Hi there, incidentally I was attemping to dig up the Space Channel's programming list broadcasted many years ago.

A long time ago, perhaps some 6-8 years ago maybe even when it was launched, I think the Space Channel broadcasted anime movies and OVAs Saturday mornings. Some of these included Dominion Tank Police and  Galaxy Express 999(first movie). There were an assortment of other anime movies many which were quite graphic and surprisingly adult oriented for something shown on a saturday morning on basic cable.

In anycase, I was attempting to get the names of some of the movies that I saw. Seems to to be quite difficult... Since then on, and throughout my anime watching experiences, I've never once encountered them again. They seem to be good old classics though.

I think Space can definately do anime. Perhaps even the old stuff they used to do as in the older, more hardcore anime gear towards a more mature audience. ( I think one called Godz or something like that was broadcast).

(as a side thing, if anyone ever remembered any of the names of the anime they used to broadcase, please send me a message)

Patlabor (the series) is one of my favorite Anime, but has it been dubbed in English? Space won't show anything subbed.

Please, Please, Please Let the new anime for Space be Star Blazers!!!!! I've waited almost twenty years to see the last part of the first series and the first part of the second series. AND have never seen any of the third.
