DBash ... I was studying the past several months for the International Society of Arborists exam and only popping in here now and then. As a trivial note I passed with 84%.

Good news, my friend. So... what type of material did you have to study?

    Firecracke:

    grammer or spelling mistake.

    It's 'grammar,' not 'grammer.'

LOL.   This is called quoting out of context.   If you had quoted my entire sentence it would have negated your criticism.  As follows:

    Firecracke:

I am not talking about the occasional grammer or spelling mistake.

All I want is comprehensibility.   The occasional spelling or grammatical error doesn't bother me.   Incomprehensibility does.  Smile

Bold and underline added by this writer.

It doesn't negate my criticism. I was nitpicking on spelling mistakes. No one said the same things would happen to bother both you and me.

But I certainly hope you understood I did so only to make fun of this thread, not of you personally.

A word I don't like, let alone use, is 'irregardless'... the combination of 'regardless' and 'irrelevant'... and I hear it quite often. I was arguing with a co-worker last year that it wasn't a word and he looked it up online - dictionary.com, maybe? - and, apparently, it's in there as a slang term.

Yes, it goes way back ... to the 1800s, I think ... but legitimacy doesn't make it any less annoying. Every era has its grating buzzwords and sometimes they stick around long past their welcome.

Irregardless, this is turning into one ginormous thread.

Oh, and on topic for this thread:  it irritates when people use the word 'pretty' as a measure of degree.  But to do so is becoming common usage.  Argh.

I've always used 'pretty' to indicate 'more' of something. I just looked it up and  Merriam Webster says that's ok.

Colloquial usage.  Also, adverbs are evil.

I've always seen them as not being evil, but as being simply amoral.

Wooo!  My thread is, and by extension, my thoughts are, not worthy of being shared! :P

By all means TheVok, take the facetious route and point out the fact that I didn't capitalise a proper noun, or that someone else made a typo.  It reflects your will to criticise for your own amusement, more than a will to contribute.  Despite your dismissive spinster-like reaction, I wasn't picking on the small errors that are to be expected on occasion, but rather I was making a point about my overall disillusionment with the frequency that I run into the less forgivable, chronic mistakes (read: often).

This forum seems as suitably friendly and open-minded as any to broach the subject - though I'm sure that since you're such a superior wordsmithing ninja, you can do little more than scoff at feeble attempts to discuss a subject clearly over everyone's head, but yours.

As an aside, since we're having fun with the BSG acronym, shouldn't it technically be simply, BG?  Battlestar IS one word, is it not?  I wonder if the BSG usage was initiated by the studio or network for promotional purposes...  gotta admit that it's certainly more catchy than BG.

Uh, what? I never implied such. I just pointed out the irony that when people (myself included) start criticizing spelling and grammar errors wholesale, it's amazing how easily we too can make such errors. That's all.

And while I may be a professional editor by trade, I always show up with a mea culpa if I or someone else notices a mistake in one of my posts. I don't get defensive about it; I apologize for my errors.

I'm not sure what's facetious about it at all, but I think it's fair to say I've proven my willingness and ability to contribute to this board for more than a decade now. If I was only into criticizing others for my own amusement, I wouldn't still be here, as I would've become a bored little troll long ago.

Despite your dismissive spinster-like reaction, I wasn't picking on the small errors that are to be expected on occasion, but rather I was making a point about my overall disillusionment with the frequency that I run into the less forgivable, chronic mistakes (read: often).

I haven't been dismissive and I haven't been a spinster. And ultimately, I agree with a lot of your points (though merely to agree with you isn't any more real a contribution than disagreeing with them ... in fact, it's less of one), but I happen to react to such chronic problems in a different manner.

Your reactions to my posts are quite defensive. Please remember that just because someone tackles a topic much differently from your approach or (not that this was the case here) completely disagrees with you, that doesn't mean at all that he/she is suggesting your thoughts aren't worth sharing in the first place. I apologize for giving that impression.

    Re: Proper Spelling and Grammar

This is a rather "high-pressure" thread, if I dare say so.  The slightest grammatical error, spelling mistake, typo etc. seems like a gaping wound under such exacting (albeit, well meaning) scrutiny. It is so demanding that I am unable to finish my Whopper Juniors...

I'm just waiting for someone to bring up Mr. A. Hitler or the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei.  That should end the debate.

Oops!!!  I guess it is all over.
