New Fox Series Dollhouse with Josh Whedon

Joss Whedon, the creator of acclaimed cult favorites "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly," is returning to Fox and reuniting with "Buffy" regular Eliza Dushku for a new action-drama called "Dollhouse."

Fox has given a seven-episode commitment to the 20th Century Fox Television project for a planned debut next year.

"It deals with our darkest impulses and our best ones," Whedon says. "It deals with all the things I like to deal with-strength, weakness, power and corruption."

"Dollhouse" stars Dushku as Echo, one of a group of secret agents living in a futuristic dorm. Each has the ability to be imprinted with custom personalities and abilities for special assignments. When they return, their newly acquired memories are wiped. The show follows Echo as she takes on a variety of assignments-some romantic, some adventurous, some uplifting, some illegal-and gains awareness of her role and confinement.

It's great that Joss has a new project and even better that Eliza is involved.

Too bad it's with Fox, it'll probably be canceled before all 7 eps are shown, if by some miracle it lasts a full season, it will still be canceled before Joss can resolve the story.

Fox sucks, Joss should know that. Sad

All I have to see is the name "Whedon" and that's a guarantee that I'll check out the show. I'm excited! Big Smile

Although ... FOX again? What's he thinking?

That's the first thing that popped into my head! Maybe Fox has some sort of long-lasting exclusive contract with Whedon or something.

As for the show, it sounds extremely intriguing. I'll definitely be checking this one out.I have no idea who this Dushku person is, but the plot definitely shows promise and a show built on that kind of story could go all kinds of places. I am excited about it, particularly since it sounds like a dark sci-fi show, which TV is currently lacking. And Whedon has proved to me that he can do sci-fi quite well. In Firefly, I always wanted to see more of the government agency, to see the inner workings of the organization and minds that were responsible for River and so forth, and it sounds like this new show could possibly draw on those elements.

According to this article Eliza signed a development deal with Fox and brought Joss in along with Tim Minear.

From the slightly more detailed item over at SciFi Wire, it looks like it's Ms. Drushku who has the development deal with Fox.  She'll be getting a co-producer credit on the show.  If you don't remember her, Eliza played the evil slayer Faith in season 3 of Buffy (plus two episodes in season 4 and a couple at the end of season 7, and a couple of episodes of Angel, for anyone who really cares).  Drushku also starred in the short lived Fox show "Tru Calling" (lasted a season and a bit... something like 26 episodes total, according to imdb)

Another news source quoted Whedon as saying he was very happy with the budget and management for the project at Fox.  Do we believe him?  Well, it's hard to believe anything nice anyone says about Fox, but we'll trust the accuracy of the report for the moment.

(edit, a few seconds later)  D'oh, somebody beat me to it while I was checking my facts... that TV Guide blog article has the most detail yet of the notices I've seen...

    Wasting no time I see...

The first Dollhouse fan site is up.This would be a good companion to Whedonesque for info as the project progresses.

Also wasting no time, the first 'Save Dollhouse' site is up too. They are beginning preparations for the petition to be sent as soon as Fox's inevitable cancellation of the show. (It's just tongue in cheek (for now)).

Here's another article, I'm sure there will be many more coming. This one has a few new quips from Joss that I hadn't seen in the others

I hate ABC's promo for that ... and I can't really see it catching on ... the guy playing Sam just seems so bland and generic.

I wonder how Global feels about Fox's announcement today that Dollhouse (as well as Fringe) will only have 5 minutes of commercials per hour. That could mean decidedly less revenue for Global.

(I was amused, too, by the story on CBC.ca, that said that the 5 minutes of commercials would be half the normal amount. Where have they been living? The average show these days has at least three times that…)

    Re: Dollhouse will be L O N G E R!

Global has never been shy about using hack and slash editing to fit more commercials in.  If you can, watch it on the American channel and hope they don't simulcast.
Bring back the pankration to the Olympics!!!
