"Crazy Drivers!!!", the Drive thread (could be spoilers!)

Nowadays there has to be a good reason to watch a Fox Network TV show, for me, after the Firefly fiasco.

So watching the opening scenes of Drive and seeing Nathon Fillion and Richard Brooks (BDH Malcom Reynolds & Jubal Early) conversing and Tim Minear as Executive Producer and Writer got my attention pretty quick. And checking IMDB, we will see an appearance of Amy Acker, undetermined episode.

I've always liked Kristin Lehman too, always playing a quirky off centered character.

Not sure if I'm hooked yet, but already there is the memorable Mal with a mission and Nathan/Minear written comedy scenes. I only hope that they dont't use the Lost backstory format, as we don't know about the characters this could happen.

And as far as reality race shows go, this show has the best elimination requirements.

    Minor Spoilers below!!!

Woah! Amy is Nathans missing wife!!!

Elimination requirements: Last place finisher new mother gets a gun and has to eliminate selected contestant by next checkpoint or else she gets eliminated. Cool!!

Alright! Let's hit it!! What? I think maybe I should have shot you!Big Smile

When I heard about this show the premise didn't sound interesting, but I decided to watch it anyway because anything with the name Tim Minear on it is worth a good look. And I'm glad I did. I'm also not sure I'm hooked yet, but I definitely enjoyed the first episodes. Seems to fit in pretty well with some other Fox action serials like 24 and Prison Break. In any case, I'll keep watching and we'll see if it makes it to a second season.

Ott.Sens. game hubby was forced to the cold dark basement rec-room to watch game1 . Saturday he gets the warm plush bright living room, so it's my turn for the dark dungeon LOL Taped this 1st 2hour episode of DRIVE to watch down in the rec-room later today. I like the fact that the following episodes air before 24 on Mondays  a good 2hour block of T.V. watching.  Will give my thoughts after viewing. From the clips I've seen,  reminds me of CannonballRun only this race is on  some acid trip.

I didn't expect too much from the premise, but I watched because of the Minear/Fillion attachments. I loved it. I found myself getting more and more hooked as the show progressed, and by the end of the two hours (which passed very fast) I was utterly sold.

So how long before it's cancelled?

I was waiting to see if they would play the episodes out of order, like maybe last nights episode would have been episode 3.Smile

I will be let down if all we see is scenes of Amy Acker tied up as the helpless wife. Although Amy Acker tied up... oops! Hopefully Tim will cast his Angel alumni in a more significant role. (Mmmmm, Angellll!!)

I find it interesting someone above equated it to a Cannonball Run movie  when I was suggesting a friend watch he stated he did not like the C.R. movies.  Good spot re Amy I will have to try to watch the fox version.  Did she do this before or after her baby?  I think it might be interesting but I wonder they might eventually if it lasts long enuff try to borrow a page from Lost and each week the bulk of a given episode will somehow probably flashbacks give background of the diferent racers.

I might watch it tonight, given it's displacing the shows I normally watch on Fox.

I kind of hope they have a very deliberate and plannet plot arc, with a clear notion of where and when the show will end. I think drawing it out into a series of indeterminant length would be something of a mistake. The show is about a race across America, which suggests that there is certainly an end point, and it being a race, slowing things down to just fill time and episodes would ruin the momentum of the show.

For a race, pacing is pretty important, it's important to keep the audience feeling like there's a race, not a meandering drama.

And I gave it a shot, but it's not my cup of tea at all. Got through about 15 minutes before I couldn't pretend to care any more.

I found it much more enjoyable than say... American Idol :D

I will continue to watch this, just to see how many times that guy gets hit in the face. First half hour, wrench. Second half hour... fist. Third half hour, boot to the head in a bathtub. Lastly, whacked with a shovel in a barn. I hope he's getting hazard pay!

    Oh, it's on again, tonight!

Loved it watched the 2hour premiere before Monday's 8pm episode. Will stick with this show to the end. Love how the characters interact and each one has a storyline that is interesting. Would like to know the reason behind the old couple on the motorbike being in the race. When they pulled off their helmets to reveal they were a elderly couple I was like "OH MY GOD"  lol  But I thought the gal with the baby ((for coming in last)) was to be put out of the race  if she didn't shoot the gal from the trio of girls ? That man did say if that girl was to arrive at the next location the one with the baby would be out,  it should not have made a difference in the rule just cause they teamed up.  And the other 2 gals who were apart of the trio obviously were last but they haven't been seen since. I thought they would have to kill one of the other racers to stay in the race.

Uh, no. What he said, exactly, was that if Ivy was still in that car when they get to the next checkpoint, Wendy would be the one eliminated. Upon arrival at the next checkpoint, Ivy was no longer in that car - she was in Wendy's. She followed the rules creatively enough to impress Them, as he told her at the Canaveral checkpoint.

Well, if it was going to be that predictable, I'd have stopped watching already. This race is psychological drama, and part of that is that nobody knows what to expect. You can't mess with people's heads if they know all the consequences before they start. Nope, I'm betting each consequence is tailored by Them to the individual person and situation, for maximum psychological impact.

Re: "Crazy Drivers!!!", the Drive thread (could be spoilers!)

I posted about Drive some time back when the previews first started, but can't find the thread any more.  Sad

I seem to recall everyone having a pretty "meh" attitude about it....that it probably wouldn't last.

I love Nathan Fillion and was sold well before it aired Friday night....I have the 2 hour pilot and yesterdays episode recorded and was only able to watch the first 1.5 or so hours, but I have to say... I LOVE IT!!

Was cool to see Amy Acker as well and I am soooooo very curious to know who these people are and their resons for having this race.  Plus I haven't yet seen past where the waitress threatened the new mom in the diner.  Woah, wasn't expecting that!!  Plus the fact she has to shoot one of her competitors for being last in the first leg.  Pretty interesting twist!  Can't wait to see more.

Probably a good idea not to get too attached to this show - from what I saw, the ratings last night weren't great. Spring is a really crappy time to start a new serialized drama, as there just aren't enough episodes to build momentum before the summer hiatus. Let's just hope they do the un-FOX-like thing and give it a fair chance.

    Yup. From Mediaweek.com's Programming Insider:

    ***

Fox drama Drive debuted in the time period with a mere (and fourth-place) 3.7/ 6, which was a decline of 35 percent from former occupant Prison Break on the year-ago Monday (5.7/ 9 on April 17, 2006). One week earlier, a repeat of Fox's House scored a considerably heftier 5.6/ 9 in the overnights.

Spring is a really crappy time to start a new serialized drama, as there just aren't enough episodes to build momentum before the summer hiatus.

You may be right about that. Anyone know how many Fox was planning to run? If 13 episodes (and counting the premiere as 2 of those), that would take it through the end of June. Which isn't too brutal; always nice to build some viewer continuity for after sweeps.

Let's just hope they do the un-FOX-like thing and give it a fair chance.

Now come on, Fox isn't any worse than any other network at that. NBC just cancelled 'Andy Barker P.I.' after six episodes (the last two conjoined on a Saturday night), then promptly did even worse on a Thursday night without it. And while Fox has certainly become mainstream, they still put some shows on the air that no other network would take a chance on.
