Sunshine -- Best Sci-Fi Movie of the Summer (year)?

I recently managed to catch Danny Boyle's Sunshine, which is in limited release right now in North America. It has Cillian Murphy (from Boyle's 28 Days Later), Michelle Yeoh and a talented cast of lesser knowns. The plot, in a nutshell, involves a mission to restart the sun, which is dying.  The film follows the progress of the Icarus II, which is on the same trajectory as the ill-fated Icarus I (presumed destroyed).  As with Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, Boyle injects the proceedings with a lot of visual style and energy to burn.  While Stephen Hawking might not give full marks to the premise of the mission, there was enough suspense, action and thoughtful filmmaking to make this one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in quite a few years. Well worth checking out!

Yes, this film was very appealing, up to the point 2/3 's of the way through where I groaned and thought, "you gotta frackin be kidding me". Which is what everyone else who has seen or reviewed this movie thought. Although it manages to redeem itself the last 15 minutes. But that blip kinda soured my enjoyment, and so I would not rate it as a best sci-fi film, maybe a good sci-fi film. If it was a best sci-fi, then I would have gone again to see it.

And speaking of a best sci-fi film in a quite a few years, the Serenity Special Edition 2 Disc DVD will be available August 21,2007. Amazon.ca

Agreed.  The movie was awesome until they decided to make an Event Horizon blunder and go a different direction.  The reviewer at Escape Pod ( http://escapepod.org/2007/08/03/ep-review-sunshine/ ) said it best.  "I could have gone without the 'Craven' elements."

Other than that it was a fine flick.

Actually, while I can understand that point of view, even those elements that would've seemed more in place in an out and out horror movie worked for me in this film. I thought it was truly great from beginning to end.

Interesting that Evil Otto would refer to Rose Byrne and Chris Evans as lesser known actors than Cillian Murphy though... but again... I know what you mean.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

I do plan on seeing it at some point, but from what I've heard so far, I doubt it'll top 'Paprika' as the best science-fiction film so far this year ....

If we are going to go by pure population stats between the Asian, European and N. American markets, Michelle Yeoh has more name recognition that Byrne, Evans and Murphy combined! LOL, I knew I shouldn't have typed in "lesser knowns"..............................I still haven't caught Paprika, but I've heard nothing but great things about it...............as for the dreaded plot twist 2/3 through, I had no problem with it, as the flick was being touted by my friends as a sci-fi with horror elements.......

This movie was quite decent until it totally jumped the shark for me.  I read a thread by Wil McCarthy totally trashing the science in this movie...wish I could find it again, it was hilarious, you could practically "see" the author foaming at the mouth, lol.

Another author -- the Hugo-nominated Peter Watts -- gave the film's science a considerable curb-stomping (www.rifters.com) in his blog.  I admit, I cried when I read it.
