HDD/DVD Recorder question for you gearheads out there...

I just picked up a Pioneer HDD/DVD burner and had a quick question...(no, I haven't read the manual in its entirety yet...) If you're recording off a TV signal on XP (which is better image quality than SP, apparently) on to the hard drive, how many gigs would it take up?  Would a two hour movie still burn on a DVD - R disc (4.whatever gigs) without requiring compression or is this venturing into dual layer DVD territory? Cheers!

Nope. I have the Pioneer also. I know that LP you fit about 4 hours on a standard DVD. SP is an 2 hours I am not sure about XP

Thanks, I guess I'll be using the dual layers for XP...although it seems a waste when you're just burning a movie by itself...can't wait for the prices on dual layers to go down. How are you liking your Pioneer so far?

If they only extended days to 36 hours I'd have time to watch all of the stuff I've recorded already...

My Panasonic records XP = 1 hour, SP = 2 hours, LP = 4 hours, SLP = 6 hours. I never use speeds lower than the 2 hour mode with that recorder because of the encoder in it (it produces macroblocks like crazy on anything with fast motion in it). For longer length recordings I use my Liteon recorders as they have better filtering and a better encoder chip. I've heard that the Pioneers have very good filtering making them good for transferring old VHS and Beta tapes which is making it a priority to get one before they all vanish. The only other unit I might consider is the Philips 3755 available at Best Buy since it has glowing reviews from many places like AVSFORUM and Videohelp. I am unable to find that recorder in my city though...
