Will Death Race 3000 crash and burn?

It looks like that is a distinct possibility. From Cinescape.

Parmount Pictures has brought on Paul W.S. Anderson to write and direct Paramount's "Death Race 3000," a remake of the cult film "Death Race 2000" directed by Paul Bartel for Roger Corman.

Tom Cruise & Paula Wagner are producers on the film.

The original B film centere on a race in which drivers accumulated points for running over pedestrians. Andersons version is set in 2020 and is described as being ultraviolent with no-holds-barred races with "heavily armed Escalades, Ferraris and Aston Martins."

If they're going to keep giving him directing jobs, at least this one's on a movie I care nothing about ....

Is this really a movie that needs a remake?

On the plus side, I don't see anyone getting upset if it ends up being total crap.

And if it ends up being cheesy fun like the first one, it'll probably be worth seeing.

Judging by the chaos and mayhem on the roads that gets reported through the traffic reports and the news, this movie appears to be more of a documentary or an attempt at a "reality movie" than a work of fiction. :p ;)

And speaking of rhetorical questions ....

Really, do any movies need a remake?

Yes, obviously you have never been in a job where all you do is drive around all day and the only thing that keeps you and your partner sane is keeping a running point tally you would have had while driving.

    Statham in Death Race 3000

I saw Jason Statham in an interview the other day mentioning that he's either just started shooting or is just about to start shooting Death Race 3000. I believe he mentioned that in this version, the race is set inside a prison...

I'd buy that for a dollar!

I wonder if Carradine and Stallone will be in it?
The owls are not what they seem.

Ouch!  Movie concept wrecked in the very first descriptive sentence.  Is that a new record?

Re: Statham in Death Race 3000

With such a setting, we can't call this movie a "remake" it's only based off the original movie... the whole thing's going to be different, but I can tell you one thing : the cars will look awesome! I've signed agreements not to reveal anything about what I've seen, but we're far from the B-Movie budget for cars in this new film. Those who'll be able to reconize the original cars will be really good, even I had difficulties doing so, and I've seen most of them changing.

As for the prison thing, I'm a bit worried about something... where will the pedestrians be?

Re: Statham in Death Race 3000

Remakes routinely make many changes from the original movie;  the problem is, too many or too few, and the right changes or the wrong changes?  Sometimes one cannot say until the film is released, or at least in front of test audiences.  But setting Death Race inside a prison?

Actually, I've heard the film will be a tense, character-driven drama set entirely in one room.

... with toy cars on one of those electric race sets from the sixties - COOL.  Then the pedestrians are plastic army men set up on the track - heh heh, sounds better all the time.
