"The Incredible Hulk" dominates U.S. box office

    Sun Jun 15, 2008 12:56pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A bigger, better "The Incredible Hulk" crushed U.S. weekend box office with a $54.5 million take, according to studio estimates.

The action-oriented film revival of the hulking green superhero is the second self-financed production from Marvel Studios, which paid General Electric Co's Universal Pictures a fee to market and distribute the film.

Marvel and Universal brought the first "Hulk" to theaters in 2003, but that more introspective film failed to follow through on its muscular debut after disappointing comic book fans.

DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda" fought its way to a second place finish with a weekend tally of $34.3 million.

    M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" landed the No. 3 spot with a weekend take of $30.5 million. That was the third-largest opening for a movie from the director who wowed audiences with "The Sixth Sense" in 1999 but disappointed with his 2006 film "Lady in the Water."

Did you venture to the theatre this weekend, Vok? If so, what flick(s) did you take in?

I'm going to see the Hulk, but maybe in a couple of weeks. I would be very interested in others' opinions of it first, though, if anyone wants to do the ol' Ebert & Roeper...

I'm also interested in "The Happening"... I like Shyamalan's movies. Geeked My girlfriend & I are probably the only people I know of (out of our social circle) who liked "Lady in the Water".

Re: Weekend box office: Hulk's still kinda incredible

I finally saw 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' ... I was saving it for Father's Day, as I can still remember seeing 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' with my dad back in 1981.

And hopefully I'll retain that memory, as 'Crystal Skull' is certainly no 'Raiders.' I have to imagine young kids today are wondering what all the fuss is about with this series. It was as over-the-top and cheesy as a 'Mummy' movie. Yuck. At least Harrison Ford at the centre of it all is still very solid ... the guy has more charisma than the rest of the cast put together (but mainly because the rest of the cast gets underwritten dialogue).

I plan to see 'The Incredible Hulk' if only for the big fights on and among Toronto landmarks, like U of T, Sam the Record Man and *snicker* Zanzibar.
