What is it about Star Trek do you like??

I find people like Star Trek for different reasons.  So why do you like it??

And can someone tell me why they do not like ST Voyager??

Hmm [^o)] Re: What is it about Star Trek do you like??

    LADYWOLFE:

can someone tell me why they do not like ST Voyager??

I had a few problems with Voyager, that prevented me from enjoying it as much as I might have:

    • Janeway was written inconsistantly. One week, she was by-the-book, the next, she was a maverick, the next, she acted as "mother" to the crew, and so forth. What's more, there never seemed to be any attempt to reconcile any of this. She was written differently depending on the needs of the story.
    • Chakotay was there to take up space. He was seldom used effectively as a First Officer.
    • The fact that the ship was populated by a half-Maquis crew was never explored. It should have been a source of friction, plotlines, and used to contrast the orderly behaviour of the starfleet half of the crew, but they were put in starfleet uniforms at the end of the pilot, and mostly forgotten.
    • Neelix.
    • On TNG, Worf's outbursts were accepted because he was Klingon. On Voyager, B'Elanna makes similar, but quieter outbursts, and she's sent to anger management training.

So, while there were some episodes I thought were really good (Distant Origin being perhaps my favourite,) the series as a whole disappointed me.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic...

Re: What is it about Star Trek do you like??

I thought this was a really good question, and I have been thinking about it for a few days.  What first brought me to Star Trek was Kirk.  Yes, I was a teeny-bopper in the 70's and loved Capt. Kirk.  But later, I just loved all the characters, and now many (MANY) years later, Star Trek is like an old, familiar friend.

I liked Voyager, probably second after TOS, but all the points noted by Just-Me above are very valid.

A job is nice, but it interferes with my life.

Re: What is it about Star Trek do you like??

I find that the first part of STV to be slow.  For some reason I do like it (if you stay with it) To me it is more about the journey  that the charactors make (personal) I like Seven of Nine's journey the most.

As always (ok mostly) they try to make you think about what you would do if that happened to you.  The OST did this and slipped it by the cencors of the time.  You could just watch and enjoy the sci-fi but it is really about something. (sorce: interviews with the writters and directors)

Yes Janeway is all over the place, but in away (if you follow every episode) it does explain why.  She is not with starfleet anymore.  She does not have them to keep her in check.  She HAS TO GET HER CREW HOME and some times she goes over board to do that.  Her fight is with herself how far can she go before losing her princibles. It is one of the few ST's that you have to follow every episode to truely understand.

The only thing that they did not explain to my liking was the truse that she made with the Borg .I know that they did that to get Seven of Nine with the crew and supplied them with a major plot line but to me they did not do a good job with that one. They could of waited the 3 to 6 weeks for the borg to lose the war and than sent the spices 8472 back (but then they would lose alot of their plot line)

Re: What is it about Star Trek do you like??

Now I to liked the various series for different reasons.  That being said I would not say I am a treker or trekie cause i have many interests including things trek. with that i have had experiences trek has gotten to me that i might not of had otherwise plus have not seen everything trek related.  i have to say thatr one thing that does frustrate me about the various treks is how some people say i do not like this trek because it did not do this or did this to much in relation to this other trek.  i guess i like what jonathan frakes once answered when he could say what is the one big difference the original series had over any of the other treks.  he said when they were doing the original they did not have to be compared to any other trek before it.  finally in my eyes when asked which i like the most there are somethings i like about one series i do not like about in the other likewise re disliking.  does that put this one better then this one not in my eyes.
