I find that the first part of STV to be slow. For some reason I do like it (if you stay with it) To me it is more about the journey that the charactors make (personal) I like Seven of Nine's journey the most.
As always (ok mostly) they try to make you think about what you would do if that happened to you. The OST did this and slipped it by the cencors of the time. You could just watch and enjoy the sci-fi but it is really about something. (sorce: interviews with the writters and directors)
Yes Janeway is all over the place, but in away (if you follow every episode) it does explain why. She is not with starfleet anymore. She does not have them to keep her in check. She HAS TO GET HER CREW HOME and some times she goes over board to do that. Her fight is with herself how far can she go before losing her princibles. It is one of the few ST's that you have to follow every episode to truely understand.
The only thing that they did not explain to my liking was the truse that she made with the Borg .I know that they did that to get Seven of Nine with the crew and supplied them with a major plot line but to me they did not do a good job with that one. They could of waited the 3 to 6 weeks for the borg to lose the war and than sent the spices 8472 back (but then they would lose alot of their plot line)
