mask!: Here's the thing...
The fans of The X-Files bought the dvd's. In droves.
The people who watch Relic Hunter watch it on tv, but do not seem to love it so much that they'd buy the dvd's.
So Relic Hunter, oddly, did better than the X-Files!
(Which rips my heart out, as The X-Files is one of my favorite TV shows.. but then... I OWN THE DVDS!)

Y'know, mask... just to play Devil's Advocate here for a second (probably more "devil" than "advocate", though)... I hear lots of people saying (and not just on this forum): "If you like a show, buy the DVDs to help support it".
So, using your logic then, if fans of a show buy the DVDs, they won't want to see it on TV. Would I be right in assuming, then, that in 5 years (if SPACE is still in existence), Relic Hunter could still be on the air, while a show like Battlestar Galactica won't be?
By this line of reasoning, buying DVDs of shows you like would be counter-productive to assuring they stay in re-runs for years to come, while nothing but the crappy programs will populate the public airwaves.
I would assume that most die-hard Star Trek fans own the DVDs too, but those shows get heavy rotation on SPACE... this doesn't seem to fit the mold either...
