New topic: Is Space so poor?

I love Space. And I hate Space. What am I saying? I love Space because of every thing sci-fi they bring to us. I hate Space because of all these old Star Trek and old series they fill their schedule with.

What I really want is what I fish out of the Net, including History Channel excellent UFO Stories collections, Most Haunted from W Network, anything about the paranormal, New World Order conspirancies, the 2012 Niburu documentaries, etc., etc.

You get my drift. More documentaries, less mind-numbing series. I used to love Discovery Channel, but I got tired of watching crab fishing and stupid handymen.

I would like to hear from everyone that thinks Space is lame and tired (Space admin, are you listening?) and needs an infusion of new material, so we don't have to surf all over the place to watch what we really, really like.

    Let's start the ball rolling...

What's wrong with Star Trek?  Last time I checked, it fit the mandate and lots of people watch it.  That's why it is still on.

Plus, Star Trek is at least sci-fi, which is what the post'er says he loves about Space.

    Documentaries are not sci-fi.

Some of them are fantasy though.

Re: New topic: Is Space so poor?

I get what you're saying RGB... the problem is that Sci-Fi/Fantasy fans are so hard to please, imo. I too am sick of Trek... and Stargate (not that I was ever a fan of Stargate to begin with). Now there's going to be even more Trek, what with DS9 coming back into the lineup. And I was never a fan of those pseudo-ghost hunter reality shows... spooky music, people saying they feel cold, then running around yelling "Did you see that? Over here, over here!" is not conclusive proof that a site is haunted, I'm sorry.

Over the last few months, I've found that, when I do watch TV, I'm watching other channels for programs that interest me. I'll probably tune back in in September when the new seasons of some shows I like start up again, but until then, I'll spend more time outdoors.

I completely agree about Discovery too. The handyman/fishing/monster garage shows... I don't know what's being "discovered" there. At least with a show like 'How It's Made' or 'Mythbusters', there is some element of "oh, I didn't know that" from a somewhat scientific point of view.

I do not think its just a case of cash but also where do you get some of this stuff.  As I understand tv its not like a station or network can go and pick/choose miovies and shows it wants.  That being said I am not saying I like or even hate everything Space airs and in someways I am thankful there is a station like Space it allows me another chance to watch some favourite shows and movies plus give me an opportunity to watch things I might not have a chance to see.

    Actually yes, they kinda can.

I mean, sure, there's a factor of competition if you have other Canadian stations/networks pursuing the same properties. But now that Space is owned by giant CTV, even that should be relatively minimized.

It all depends on where they rank within the organization.

It's funny: for every thread about how Space doesn't pick up enough new stuff, there's another thread about how Space doesn't bring back enough classic stuff. Guess we're a hard bunch to please. <shrug>

Personally, I will be at least marginally happy if the new PTBs at Space try to keep a focus on sci-fi and fantasy, instead of treating the channel as a dumping ground for CTV's second runs and whatever crappy cancon they can get on the cheap. But I'm not holding out much hope. Time will tell, I guess.

I don't think any programming people read here. Mark Askwith is a frequent reader and contributor, but he's not involved with programming. It might be better to write Space directly with specific show suggestions.

It's fun to complain.  It helps pass the time.

It is also why the internet was invented.  So that everyone with an opinion or complaint could express it.

Actually Space already airs some paranormal stuff and documentaries.  I believe one is called Beyond and it's a half hour documentary on different paranormal topics shown on Saturday, with Alannah Myles as host.  It's done using re-enactments and interviews.  Occasionally they show documentaries from the Enigma series (which is also broadcast on the Vision network), which often talks about paranormal, supernatural topics.  That is on Saturday as well and like the previously mentioned show, Canadian-produced.  You have to just look a little harder for these shows.

Check out the show list, it has more:
